Hall 8: Teacher Notes - Journey to Topaz

My students and I hope you and your students will enjoy reading and discussing events in this novel as much as we have. Yosiko Uchida offers all readers a powerful lesson on the importance of understanding, valuing, and protecting the rights each one of us has as a citizen of the United States.

Useful Sources:

To start your Journey to Topaz, I recommend reading to your class Baseball Saved Us by Ken Mochizuki. I would also recommend that you contact the Elk Grove Unified School District (9510 Elk Grove_Florin Road, Elk Grove, CA 95624, 916-686-7743) to request a copy of their Time of Remembrance Teacher Packet. San Francisco Unified School District , together with the National Japanese American Historical Society, has also put together a comprehensive teacher's guide for their unit: The Bill of Rights and the Japanese American World War II Experience (415-431-5007).
