B.K. (Betty) England enjoys working in oil, Prismacolor and pencil, but she specializes in pastel. It's rich color and texture, are wonderful for animal portrayals, and she feels that the medium is perfect for her realistic, painterly style. Born in Wenatchee, Washington, B.K. grew up on a ranch, where an eclectic herd of horses pranced through her childhood. She and her father shared a love of all horses, and her grandfathers were both horsemen. One had farmed with draft teams and took B.K. to harness races; the other especially loved gaited horses.
B.K. has had many one-artist shows. She has been poster artist for such varied California events as the Auburn Wild West Stampede, the Draft Horse Classic, and the Cowpoke Poetry Gathering. Her portrait titled "The Spanish Ambassador" was accepted by the American Academy of Equine Arts, and hung in the Kentucky Derby Museum. She has also designed a logo and been year book artist for the American Endurance Ride Conference. Each year, B.K. designs an equine art t-shirt for the Loomis Basin Horsemen's Association Benefit Horse Show, held each October in northern California. Horses are definitely B.K.'s favorite subject, and her equine portraits can be found in private collections from coast to coast, and in England. Her photographs have appeared in many magazines, and she has been featured columnist for Equine Images magazine. Her "cowboy" and equine poetry has been published in Western Horseman, American Cowboy Poet, and other magazines, and she has appeared at various cowboy poetry gatherings. B.K. was also a co-host of a very popular horse radio talk show in the northern California area. Although B.K. has won numerous awards for her artwork and photography, her greatest pleasure comes from capturing the image and personality of a beloved animal to the satisfaction of the people who know it best. She feels very fortunate that a lifelong passion for horses has lead to such a many-faceted career.
