Yoshiko Uchida is a Japanese America who has had first-hand experience with internment. Born in Alameda, California, as a Nisei (second generation in the United States), she used her own experiences and reflections to create Journey to Topaz.

She has studied both in the United States and Japan. Her many books include stories for both adults and children. She currently lives - and writes - in Berkeley, California, where she continues to write historical fiction about Japanese American experiences.
"...I am now writing books based on the relatively unexplored history of Japanese-American. I hope these books will help dispel long-existing stereotypic images and also increase among Japanese-American young people an understanding of their own history and pride in their identity. Ultimately, however, I try to write of meaningful relationships between human beings, to celebrate our common humanity."*
