Impressions of Angel Island

Our class took a field trip to Angel Island on October 14, 1999. We would like to share some impressions with you.

Nguyen: I can't wait to get on the ferry. I just want to hike.

Stephanie: A sad place for the Chinese people

Dan: Prisonlike, isolated

Mai: Thought it was beautiful, amazing, interesting.

Elaine: One building was kind of gross, but it showed its purpose and what the Chinese went through.

Daniel: My first of Angel Island was that it was pretty and that the hike would only be about 1 mile.

Brian: Thought that the pans were for something else, not for using the bathroom.

Brie'anna: My first impression was that this was like a place where bad people went.

Keith: One way in, no way out.

Derrick: At the immigration station, I was shocked when I saw the beds and bathroom, sad that the men and women (family members) were separated, mad about what questions the officials asked the immigrants, and how they treated the immigrants.

Courtney: Hasn't changed from when the Chinese were there. Chinese women had no privacy at all. Very beautiful view of the San Francisco Bay.

Willy: This island is very big. Wow! you can see the bridge.

Mark: Angel Island looked beautiful fro the ferry.

Alex: I wanted to start on the trip and see all the neat stuff. I wondered what we were going to do there.

Alisa: Angel Island is so beautiful and so much bigger than I expected. The immigration station is a dump! How could 100 woman sleep in that dinky room?

Daisy: The buildings where the Chinese stayed were old and musty.

Michael: My first impression of Angel Island when I first got off the ferry was that it was very beautiful just by the look of it. There were so many trees so that made it look even more beautiful.

Casey: When I first saw their poems, I thought it's because they like to write, but the poems were the things on their mind and some were sad.

Danielle: Looked like it would have looked in the early 1900's.

Romeo: Exciting on the ferry boat. Cool statue where Dale (our guide) talked.

Steven D: I had an incredible trip to Angel Island

Hudson: That's a big island!

Summer: My first impression of Angel Island was "Immigrants Prison." I couldn't believe the locks and bars. They were immigrants, not dangerous convicts! Why were they treated as such? Didn't anyone have passionate feelings for them?

Adeline: This is a beautiful place, for such a scary, mean place. Peaceful. Fresh air from the sea.

Sarah: Beautiful, fresh air, perfect view, work of art.

Jennifer: Whoa! It seems a pretty peaceful place for such a horrible place back then.

Stephen: Angel Island is huge, calm, quiet, beautiful
