Pitfire

is an ancient method of firing
used by numerous cultures
throught the world.
First the pots are
rubbed and burnished
with a smooth object
such as a stone or spoon
three times
over a period of days.
Then they are loaded
into a dug out pit
and fired with
dried cow dung
and wood scraps,
achieving a low temperature eggshell finish
that is colored by
the fire and smoke.

Pitfired pottery
is neither
water tight nor food safe,
yet creates
a beautiful piece
of decorative art work.
Vases can be used
by placing
a water tight container
inside the pitfired vase.
