WHAT IS A BIT WORTH.

by Don Steffen
IF you are a farmer think about this: If there were 16 bits in one square inch it would take 512 square inches for 1 kilobyte and 524,288 sq/in or 3641 sq/ft for a megabyte and 3,728,384 sq/ft or 35.4 acres for 1 gigabyte . For the 40 gigs in most new computers it would need 1416 acres !
IF you are highway traveler think about this: At 8 bits per inch of length , 1 kilobyte would take 1024 inches or 185 feet and 1 megabyte would take 87,337 feet or 1.65 miles and 1 gigabyte would take 1689 miles. For the 40gigs in many computers it would take 67,584 miles- almost 3 times around the earth.!
IF you are a trucker think about this: If 1 bit weighed 1 ounce then 1 kilobyte would weigh 8192 ounces or 512 pounds and 1 megabyte would weigh 524,288 pounds or 262 tons and 1 gigabyte would weigh 268,168 tons. For the 40 gigs in many computers it would weigh 10,726,720 tons and would take 268,168 40ton semi-trailer loads to haul. At 16 semi-trucks per mile it would be a string 16,760 miles long!
IF you are a banker think about this: If 1 bit were worth 1cent then 1 kilobyte would be worth $81.92 and 1 megabyte would be worth $83,886.08 and 1 gigabyte would be worth $85,899,345.92 and 40 gigs would be worth $3,435,973,836.80 !!!
Even the TI99 /4a would be worth $5,242.88 ( WAS Gates thinking like this??? :-)
