HYPO CLEARING AGENT

by Ted Peterson
If you want to save your photo papers or negative for some time you will need to make sure that all the hypo is washed out of the paper or negative. Even if you wash them for an hour or so a small amount of hypo may be in the paper, etc.
Most photographers will use a hypo clearing agent or what some people call hypo eliminator. Hypo clearing agent does not cost a lot but if you make your own you can save a lot more money.
When you use hypo clearing agent, you do not keep the solution very long after you take the paper out. It is so cheap that you will discard after one nights use.
To make a concentrate solution do the following:
One gallon of hot water.
205 grams Sodium Sulfite
2 grams of Sodium Bisulfite
Do not add any Sodium Sulfite as that is all that 1 gallon of water will hold.
To use, mix the above one part of solution to 9 parts of water.
The Sodium Bisulfite is used on film, to lower the ph to 7.0. If you are using this for paper only, leave out the Sodium Bisulfite as this will help the paper to have higher gloss.
