E MAIL |
byTed Peterson
E mail has now replaced the US Post Office mail as the way that most of the people in the world send messages or letters to other people. This has happen all over the world. Finland has more e-mail address by percent of their people with e-mail address then the U. S. By the end of this year all people in Finland will have an e-mail address. The U. S. is in 7h place.. As you can see that this is changing every day.
A frequently asked question is "how can I get an e-mail address and what is the cost". This article will cover this.
We will cover this from the most cost to the lowest cost. The cost can be from $.00 to over $21.95 depending on who the ISP is. (ISP is the name of the companys that you use to check into the web for your e-mail .)
.
DIFFERENT ISP (From high cost down) |
AOL - Compuserve
Both of these companies are the same. Over 1/2 of the people in the U. S. use this ISP because of the way that they advertise. Almost all people will from time to time receive a CD in the mail telling you how to get your own e-mail address, etc. The only thing that you will get other then what you will get with any other ISP is their chat room. They are also by far the most expensive one ($22.95 month). There are a large of phone numbers in the U.S. There are over 8,000,00 people in the U. S. with AOL address.

OTHER ISPs THAT CHARGE
There are a large number of other ISPs out there. (In Portland over 300). They will charge from $9.99 a month up. Some of them are in the group that charge $19.99 a month. Tellport is one of that class. With this group you will be able to use it any place you go as they have phone numbers over a large number of states.
The next group is the group that charge from $13.95 to $16.95 a month.
The next group is the ISPs that charge from $9.99 to $12.99 a month. If you have Kaiser in Oregon US West will give you a e-mail address for $12.95 a month. I am using JPS that charge $19.95 a month and they have phone numbers all over the United States.
There are some small ISPs that have another system and will charge less. Agora (the other one that I have) charge only $8.34 a month but you can only use it 30 hours a month and as it is run by one nan that program at Intel it has only one blank of phone numbers (36) and you CANNOT get any help with it. You have to correct all trouble as there is NO phone number or address to get help. If you do not know how to fix your trouble you do not want to use then.
One of the thing that you need to check into when you are checking them is what number of e-mail address do they have? Agora will give you one and JPS will give you 3. Some of them will give you 5 or more. That way you can have one for your better half, wife, children, work, etc.
Another thing that you may want to check into is, do they have any space that you can use to have your own web. Agora will give you 1/2 meg space + for a one time charge of $1.00 a meg will give you a lifetime additional space. I have 21 megs. JPS will give you 10 meg and will not give you any more. If you may want to have a web some time later you will net this space. If you use the Kaiser $12.95 a month on US West you will have no space but if you use their $19.95 a month you will have some space. Check into this.
FREE E-MAIL AND WWW. (WORLD WIDE WEB)
There are a large number of free e-mail service out there and some of these also let you work the web. The way they make money is that they will place adds on your monitor either on the top, side, or lower end. There are two different way they work. One way is that there will be one way to go on and get your e-mail and another way to go on the web. When they go for the e-mail only they are only on the phone for 1 min or less. When they are on the web you stay on the phone. The other way some works is they do the same way as the for pay ISPs does and stay on the phone and let you do both .
June is the oldest free service and also the largest with about 9,000,000 members. You have two different ways to get on. The first is for you e-mail and the other way is for the web.
June have different web service. The first one is free. More add and no tech. service. The 2nd Juno Gold for 34.95 a year less adds and some different services and the 3rd is full web and tech. support for $19.95 a month.
Both Blue Light Special (K-Mart) and Our House (Ace Hardware) were on but they have now closed and you can no longer use them.
Another one is IWON.Com. This works the same way as Juno. It is now part of Juno and it will come Juno soon.

After you get on the web there are then a lot of different e-mail address that you can have (like yahoo, hotmail, etc.). Also you can receive ALL of your e-mail any place in the world if you can get on the web. You do not have to get on the web from your ISP, just go to any computer that can get on the web and follow the instruction that we have printed on this web under "E-MAIL AWAY FROM HOME".
