FUEL MILEAGE |
| by Ted Peterson |

| In most of the US except Oregon state, and one other state, you can figure your own gas mileage over one month. For extra information on Oregon, to to the end of this article. |
| When you want to find out your gas mileage you write down your speedometer reading the first time that you fill up your own tank. Fill to the top.. This is the start and you do not need to write down the cost or the gallons used. |
| From then on over the month each time you take on some fuel write down the total cost, milage, and the number of gallons of gas. On the gallons go to 3 decimal place ( like 4.021 gallons.) You may have to take the total cost and divide by the cost per gallon to come up with that total. |
| At the end of the month fill up complete (top it off). write down the total cost, and gallons used. |
|---|
| Add up the total cost for the month, total number of gallons used, and total miles that you traveled. |
| Take the total gallons and divide it by the miles driven and it will show you the amount of gas used each mile in 3 decimal places.. |
| Take the total cost and divide by gallons used and this will give you the average cost per gallon. |
| Take the total cost and divide by miles driven and you will come up with the cost per mile for gas. |
| In Oregon you will have a problem. You can not pump your own gas. You can be fined $150.00 if the state catches you with the hose in your hand and the station can be fined $500.00 for the first time they catch them letting you punp your own gas. ($2,500.00 for the 3rd time). They watch this closely. |
| Most of the station people will not top off your gas. They will let the punp turn the gas off and your tank may be down 1 or more gallons so that you can not get a true amount. I went into one of the big stations and asked for a fill up. They said $10.25. I then went down the street and was able to get another 1 1/2 gallons of gas. In Oregon you should try different stations and test it over 2 or more months to get a true figure. |
