SEASIDE - CANNON BEACH - GEARHART

These 3 beach towns are some of the closest area beaches from Portland. To travel there take the main freeway west out of Portland (Sunset Highway (Highway 26)) and go about 85 miles. This is a good wide road. About 6 miles before Seaside you will come to a fork in the road. Left to Cannon Beach (about 6 miles) and right about 6 miles to Seaside and then a few miles to Gearhart. The main highway along the coast that goes through all the Oregon beach towns is highway 101.
Seaside is one of the main beaches in Oregon. Most of the kids go there over Labor Day, Fourth of July, Spring Break, and at other times. This town is set up to take care of visitors. It has a large nice beach. You can find any type of food, entertainment, hotels, etc.
Cannon Beach is one of the best beaches in Oregon. It is quite and lovely. It is a long-wide beach. At the southern end of the beach you will find a 200 foot rock near the shore that a lot of people will visit on at low tide but if they do not come in when the tide comes in the fire Dept has to go out there and get them.
At the north entrance of Cannon Beach is a short road going north that goes to Ecola State Park. This is one of the best state parks in Oregon. The view of the ocean and beach is the best around and there is a nice trail down to the beach.
Gearhart has became a town that more and more the upper crust has taken over. It now has high price appartments, cono and cabins. There are not a large number of low price motel rooms now. This has changed in the last few years. This town has expensive homes and cabins and is set up for the person that has money. You may want to drive through to see how the other people lives.
The total distance to these 3 town is about 95 miles and will take less then 1 3/4 hours to travel unless you try to go during rush hours in Portland.
You can travel to all three cities and return in one day. In the winter the temperature will be between 35 and 55 and in the summer the temperature at the beach will be between 55 and 70. There may be a few days that it will go over 70. Dress accordly. The water temperature will stay about the same 45-55. You may find some Japanese floats as the Japanese current goes by Oregon
